Permanent exhibitions

The permanent exhibition takes the visitor on a historical journey that begins with an introduction to the prehistoric time in Greenland followed by a display of what the interior of a standard Greenlandic home looked like in the 1900s. Next to this, hunting tools are on display alongside a kayak and a traditional dog sled. There is also a photo exhibition of the first photographs taken in the colony of Egedesminde along with a timeline of historical events. In the following rooms, there are whaling tools and a room that exclusively focuses on the Greenlandic national costume and its transformations through time.

The sod house

The sod house is distinct from the museum itself. It is located near the church of Aasiaat, just a short walk from the museum’s main building.

The sod house is a model of traditional Greenlandic houses in the late 1800s and early 20^th century. Guests can book a visit in order to see what a real sod hose looked like, both its interior and its exterior.

Inuit hunting tools

The kayak was an important tool to the Inuit hunters. With this, they were able to catch seals and walruses, as well as some whale species. During the wintertime, hunters would use a dogsled to hunt seal and other animals, such as polar bears, on the frozen ocean.

National costumes

The women’s national costume has had several regional changes, whereas the men’s white anorak has not been altered the past 100 years. The different costumes displayed at the museum show the costume’s transformation from a normal costume to a festive costume.

Umiaq

One of the umiaqs is upholstered in sealskin and the other umiaq is upholstered in canvas.

An umiaq (a women’s boat) is generally 8 to 10 meters (26’-32’) long and 1,5 meters (5’) wide at the top.

The two umiaqs can be seen near building B-404 near the church.
